Medical marijuana studies in Australia show that patients can better manage the negative effects of their chemotherapy.

It is well known that chemotherapy is incredibly difficult on the patients’ bodies during their treatment. New studies conducted by Tilray in Australia are proving just how effective medical marijuana can be at treating some of the worst side effects of medical marijuana. Rather than prescribing patients, pharmaceutical after pharmaceutical to ease symptoms, this research is proving the natural remedies can be more effective.

The clinical trial focused on the benefits patients can experience, regarding a decrease in nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy. Patients in the trial had informed researchers that these two side effects were their most feared before beginning and during their chemotherapy treatments. The study monitored the results of 81 patients that were provided medical marijuana capsules three times a day. Of these 81 patients, an undisclosed amount were provided placebo pills. All patients were provided doses of antibiotics as well, which are typically prescribed with chemotherapy to reduce negative effects.

The results of the study found that over 25% of patients taking the medical marijuana experienced no nausea or vomiting. Compared to the 14% who were provided the placebo, it is evident a significant number of individuals experienced greater benefits by taking the medical marijuana capsule than the antibiotics alone.  Additionally, only one third of all the patients experienced any dizziness.

Tilray will be conducting another phase of the study in the coming months. This phase will monitor the results of over 170 patients. Tiray is hopeful that the results will be the same or better than the current phase of this study.

As the amount of research conducted on medical marijuana conducted across the globe continues, more of the positive benefits of this natural product are shown in a brighter light.
